Hear Builder Auditory Memory

Ever have trouble with your children hearing and remembering what you say to them?  Maybe you’ve chalked it up to them being distracted, or just young.  Maybe you said too many things in a row and they got confused.  Maybe they just need more practice!  Here is your chance to give that to them in a fun way!  The HearBuilder Auditory Memory software by Super Duper Publications has come to my family’s rescue!

As a member of the Old Schoolhouse Review Crew, I was given a copy of the HearBuilder Auditory Memory software to use with my children (ages 6, 8, & 11).  I can’t begin to tell you how much fun we’ve had with this software.  It is a game.  My kids login and join Recall Agents Kim and Joey to save MemoryTown from Dr. Forgetsit!  Now what could be more fun than that?  My kids love playing secret agent games so this program was right down their alley.

The award winning HearBuilder Auditory Memory games are intended for children grades Kindergarten through 8th grade (ages 5 – 12).  In the beginning, you choose your mission.  You can work on numbers (3 – 7 digits), words (3 – 5 words), memory for details, auditory closure (sentence completion) or WH info (WHo, WHat, WHen, WHere details).

There are little games in between the learning, too.  For example, the one my 6 year-old loved was building a robot.  You were given a robot to look at and then had to duplicate him by choosing individual parts (i.e. arms, legs, torso) that matched.  If you built him in the given time frame then you won the mini-game.

Playing HearBuilder

Likes:

  • There is a “Play Code” button on the screen that allows you to play the words or numbers when you are ready.  It’s not like a slide show that just advances and you’re caught off guard by it moving to the next slide.  This makes listening intentional and you can walk away for a few minutes and come back to your game at will.  This worked great for my family because there can be many distractions in a household with four children.  It was nice for my kids to be able to choose when they were ready to hear important information.
  • In the Words section the words are not only spoken but also printed for building reading skills.  For example, you might see a set of six different cards, hear three cards and all the words are printed on the cards along with a picture.  I felt this re-enforced reading instead of just recognizing the drawing.
  • I love the whole premise behind teaching kids to remember what they hear!  Not everyone was a born auditory-style learner, but so much of what we are expected to learn is presented to our ears.  I think this program has really taken research into account and made a product that will truly be helpful to children and adults alike.  (The presentation is really for children, but I must admit, I played the game myself and enjoyed it!)

HearBuilder Auditory Memory Program

Dislikes:

  • You have to have the CD in the computer to play the game.  It is just something with which you must keep up.  I would prefer it if you could download it to your computer then just have an icon to click, but really a small dislike in the grand scheme of things.
  • Because the game stores memory on the computer and not on the disk, you have to use the same computer every time you play.  This wasn’t a problem for us because we only have one computer with a working CD-ROM drive, but I can see where it could be a problem for some big families or for use in a classroom setting with multiple machines for the students.

My opinion?  I highly recommend this program to anyone whose children like to play games and need a little extra push with recalling auditory information.  The home version is available for $69.95, however, now until August 31, 2012, save 30% (a savings of nearly $21!) on the HearBuilder Auditory Memory Home Edition using the coupon code:  BLGAM30  (Standard shipping to the US and Canada appears to be free, too, when your minium purchase is over $20.00.)  Find them on Facebook or learn more about their amazing  products here.
