FREE Cloth Diaper Sewing Patterns

July 19, 2010

It is so much fun to diaper babies in cloth.  Just from a visual perspective alone, there’s the style, the color, the pattern, the embroidery…But how much more fun is it to make your own cloth diaper for your baby?  Many moms do it everyday!  If you are lost as where to get started sewing your own stash of fluff – you’re in luck! Here are a few FREE patterns and tutorials to send you in the right direction:

Sewing a Pocket Nappy – this site is based in New Zealand so be prepared to use the centimeter side of your ruler!  Here you will find color photos and step-by-step instructions on how to sew a cloth nappy (diaper) similar in style to FuzziBunz, Happy Heinys or bumGenius pocket diapers.  There is also a link on the home page directing you how to sew a fitted diaper as well.  (Please note that many of these patterns are only for personal use.)

Fern and Faerie – free pictures and directions to sew a fitted, pocket or all-in-one (sewn in soaker) cloth diapers

Sew Your Own Diapers – this site has every cloth diaper you could ever think of making!  WOW!  (Mama Cloth, too!)  There are photos and detailed explanations and even a list of items you will need to get started sewing your own cloth and the approximate cost of each item!  A comprehensive site.  The only drawback is that since it is free, the owners have put up lots of ads to pay for their site, but if you can overlook them, Sew Your Own Diapers is an amazing haven for getting started.

Born To Love – this tutorial shows all the steps to turn an old adult sweater into a wool soaker (cover) for your baby’s cloth diapers.  Very cool!

Goodness Gracious – elaborate down-loadable pattern and instruction booklet to make your own diapers.  Excellent resource!

Little Bean Bum – this blog entry is more of a picture tutorial of how to make a pocket diaper out of old (or new) microfleece.  I found it quite informative.

Hope these links get everyone started stitching!

I never even thought about sewing my own diapers. After my many sewing projects I am suprised this hasn’t crossed my mind. Thank you for the sites, something I will try for sure.
