Cry Like a Baby or Sleep Like One?

For some families, this is one in the same.  Some parents have been taught that the only way their little ones can drift off to dreamland is by screaming out the days’ worries.  It is my “mompinion” that babies cry because they cannot yet speak.  They use their cries to communicate with those around them.  Cries can indicate pain, hunger, discomfort, anger, fear, boredom, loneliness, fatigue…..the list goes on and on.  As adults, we use our words, facial expressions and other body language to communicate with others.  Babies?  They cry.

So what do your baby’s cries mean?  If you are a seasoned parent you might be able to tell by listening to your infant.  If you are a new parent, you might still need a little training.  One thing is for certain, babies do not cry when they are happy and all is right with their world.  They only cry when they want to express that something is not right with them. Wouldn’t you agree?

If that is true, why then does the American culture allow and even encourage their to children to “cry it out” (CIO) in order to fall asleep?  Cry *what* out?  Their fears?  Their loneliness?  Their discomforts?

In her book, The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night, Elizabeth Pantley offers a more gentle (and quiet) approach to getting your precious little one to sleep.  She writes,

“Through months of research, personal experience, and working with 60 test case families, I have assembled and organized a wide variety of gentle ways to help your baby sleep through the night. The ideas do not involve letting your baby cry — not even for a minute. You will create a customized plan for your own family based on the ideas, all within a simple and easy-to-follow framework. It’s a method that is as gentle and loving as it is effective.”

If you have a baby, you need this book!  And, check out Elizabeth’s website….she has lots of free items you can download that will help you to get your baby into the proper sleeping rhythms.
