Get Out and Play!

August 18, 2009

If you’re like me and my family, we are always on the lookout for inexpensive ways to spend time together.  Hikes can be one of the neatest ways to explore and spend time making great memories.  Hiking to new and different places is exciting and keeps the kids interested in family adventures. is an online store.  We have never personally bought anything from there so this post is in no way an advertisement for their company, nor are we giving their products or service any sort of stamp of approval…BUT it has some great ways to help your family to get outdoors and spend time together!passport

One of the items found there is an educational passport you can download and print for your kids (and you) to enjoy.  The passport comes with safety tips, a supplies list for hikes and bike trips, empty pages with story starters for your children to record what they saw and did on the trip, a place for a sticker (like a “real passport”), and games!

You may elect not to print all of the outdoors passport, as some of it could be left up to your child’s creativity if the paper used was blank.  This passport format easily lends itself to adding photos and other souvenirs from your family adventure, as well as additional pages not already included in the passport.

One of the pages I liked best was the “Mad Libs” page.  Remember those?  Someone asks you for differnt parts of speech (i.e. noun, verb, adjective, etc.) and they fill in the blanks with your answers.  Once complete, they read the humorous story you “created” out loud – a sure way to get the laughter started!  There were also hidden pictures, seek and find puzzles and other brain teaser games.

At the passport link, you can also find a U.S. map with links to ideas of outdoor things to do in your local area.  If you choose to, after your child fills up the passport, you can apply online to receive an “Official Certificate of Completion” and a prize from REI.  Kids always enjoy receiving mail, so this would be a fun way to encourage them to finish their passport!

Now, it’s time for me to quit writing and go enjoy some quality family time!
